Nice ensemble. From a vantage point above the Rheinische Bahnstrasse, you can see the artificially created Niederfeldsee with its striking red steel bridge. A stele commemorates the European Green Capital 2017.

Where the Rhenish Railway once rattled over the railway embankment, you will now find an idyllic setting: the artificially created Niederfeldsee. With an area of 2.2 hectares and a water depth of up to five metres, it has been a popular local recreation area since 2014. The lake is fed by groundwater extraction and rainwater drainage from neighbouring roofs. New residential buildings have been built on the waterfront promenade. A new, approximately 50-metre-long bridge spans the Niederfeldsee. The red-painted steel frame in the middle marks a seating area. The old bridgeheads have been preserved as viewing points. From here you have a good view of the entire lake and the waterfront promenade. In the future, the current "Rheinish Railway" cycle path will be part of the Ruhr RS1 cycle expressway.

Where goods traffic once rolled unhindered, the Niederfeldsee has been excavated. And next to it you can walk and cycle past it with restrictions.
