The Niederfeldsee is a 2.2 hectare artificial lake in the Altendorf district of Essen. Very beautifully done.

Beautiful artificial lake in Altendorf on the Rheinische Bahnstrasse. Refreshments for cyclists in the "Radmosphere". Part of the urban renewal of Altendorf.

Small artificial lake landscape in a new development area directly on the Rheinische Bahnbahn.

Nice lake in a focal point directly on the Rheinische Bahn, the Cafe Radatmosphäre is in the immediate vicinity.

The Niederfeldsee is a 2.2 hectare artificial lake in the Altendorf district of Essen.

In the area of the Niederfeldsee, the section of the former Osterath-Dortmund South railway line of the Rhenish Railway Company, which went into operation in 1874, ran over a dam. The Essen-Altendorf train station was located a few hundred meters to the west. After the line was closed in 2002, the Ruhr cycle superhighway (RS1) was opened on its route in 2010, which today runs over the bridge of the lake in the area of the demolished railway embankment.

In 2011, construction of the Niederfeldsee on Rüselstrasse began and in August 2014 the 8.115 million euro project, which was funded by the urban development investment program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, was completed. On September 20, 2013, the 46-meter-long pedestrian and cycle path bridge over the Niederfeldsee was opened in the presence of Mayor Reinhard Paß.[1]

The part of the lake to the north of the cycle path was created in the area of a demolished allotment garden and was landscaped with a green bank. The southern part of the lake is reminiscent of a harbor basin and borders a 320-meter-long and 4.2-meter-wide promenade. Boating and swimming are not permitted. The deepest point of the lake is about five meters. It is fed by groundwater from a separate well and rainwater drained from the roofs of surrounding residential buildings. When it overflows, the water is drained into the Sälzerbach, which has since been freed of sewage.
As part of the construction of the lake, the surrounding residential area was renovated by replacing 180 old apartments with 61 modern apartments in seven houses.

A nice place for a break. Sit comfortably by the water, relax or enjoy delicious ice cream.

Nice place to take a break, and in the "Radmosphere" you can have a coffee and a piece of cake to fortify yourself...

"...Now we continue rolling through beautifully landscaped local recreation areas. First we pass the Niederfeldsee, where a café has been set up. The RevierRoute Grubenfahrt then leads past the Helene Amalie mine and directly to the Krupp Park, where the Krupp Lake is located. We now make our way through Essen until we finally reach the Zollverein mine..."

This is a great place to take a break. Plenty of seating and great views are available. There's also a lovely café right by the lake.
