Opposite the peace bell you will find a Shinto shrine or jinja (神社). In a small format like ours, they are often located along Japanese roads. According to traditional belief, a God or Kami (神) resides in the jinja. The Japanese stop there, bow, clap their hands, donate change and give thanks or make a wish to the Gods. In Japan, the Shinto shrines to important Gods are huge and are sometimes combined with Buddhist temples.

At the Japanese Garden, all the small change collected goes to charities.
