Hasselt and Zonhoven have competed for a piece of heathland since 1333. To finally try to resolve the conflict, the Prince Bishop of Liège had this 'pillar' placed in 1666. On the Hasselt side, the coats of arms of the city of Hasselt and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège were engraved, together with the text (in Latin) that the borders were established by Prince Bishop Maximilian Henry of Bavaria. On the side of Zonhoven there was a text engraved (also in Latin) that if the border was violated, the people of Zonhoven would be punished with corporal punishment. The conflict lasted for 5 centuries until Napoleon ended it and divided the area in two. This marker still stands in its original location.

Although the Grenspaal is mentioned as a starting point for many walkers, there is no real possibility to park. This can be done further along the Slangbeekweg or Langvennestraat along the street. There is a bench, but no table.
