The zigzag bridge in the water on the left is called Yatsuhashi and is typical of an iris pond so you can get a closer look at the flowers.
A secondary purpose of this particular form is spiritual in nature. The bridge itself is the entrance to the second section: the Central Japanese Garden. To keep evil spirits out, this bridge is constructed in a form that is confusing for them.Source: Japanese Garden Walking Guide
