In 1856, Den Helder was one of the first towns in the Netherlands to have its own water tower with water pipes. 50 years later the old tower no longer met the requirements and a new one was planned. In 1908 the new water tower was erected in the center of Den Helder. In 1959 the tower was given a gray cement coat over the beautiful bricks to qualify as modern. But in 2005 the 1908 style was restored, the layer of cement was removed and the tower now looks like it did then.
