Under the title "ExStream Resist," a research group from the University of Duisburg-Essen investigated the occurrence of macrozoobenthos here in spring 2022... what? That's the scientific term for animals at the bottom of bodies of water that can just be seen with the naked eye: small crustaceans, worms, or insect larvae.

The project name already suggests: The researchers are particularly interested in how bodies of water and their habitats react to the many stresses they face today. This is important because the return of life to the waters is valuable for ecosystem function. For example, the Emscher sculpin lives here, an endangered fish species that survived here in an upper reaches of the Boye River unpolluted by wastewater and was surprisingly rediscovered a few years ago. Their long wait was worth it: After more than 100 years of use as an open, wastewater-bearing slurry basin, the Boye River is now free of wastewater and has been renaturalized. And even if we don't spot the fish ourselves, the heron on the banks is increasingly finding them.

Here, directly opposite from the south (on the right of the Boye) the Kirchschemmsbach and from the north (on the left) the Haarbach flow into the Boye. The area has been redesigned to be close to nature and made accessible as part of the ÖPEL 2023 project. Here is also the intersection of the new Boye cycle path with the Bottrop-Gladbeck "City Trail", which follows the two tributaries mentioned above.
