The city pond was created after the French occupation in 1924/1925
The fighter of the Freikorps Löwenfeld in Bottrop in 1920, Schageter, was executed as a freedom fighter during the French occupation of 1923-1925. He was made into a national hero.
The ponds in Bottrop's city park were named after him and had that name until the 1970s.
