As early as 1895, the Landwehr- und Kriegerverein Gladbeck was busy erecting a memorial for the fallen soldiers of the wars of liberation against Napoleon (1813-1815) and the Franco-Prussian War of 1879/1871. However, the draft was not pursued further, and the funds collected were not sufficient for implementation. After the First World War - in the course of the monuments erected everywhere - a special purpose association was founded in 1926 to erect a memorial and in 1929 a committee was convened. The city building officer Richard Korn designed the round courtyard in 1930, and construction began in 1933. The city used unemployed welfare recipients to save costs. Inside the memorial made of Ruhr sandstone originally bore the saying frieze:
"1914-1918 To honor the dead of war, to call for generations of victory."
The second line was removed after World War II and replaced by the years 1939-1945.
