Unpaved path, muddy after heavy rainfall.
The Hoornwerk is an open, sloping area of 8 hectares. These remains of the fortification (Hoornwerk) were built by Vauban. Around 1660 there was a Spanish castle or citadel that was built by the Spanish ruler. Vauban converted the citadel around 1690 into a hornwork that would keep attackers at a great distance from the city. After the dismantling of the fortresses (from 1853) it became an agricultural area. From 1999 onwards, the city developed the area as a regional Heempark, with ponds, an orchard, hedges, wood edges and bushes, flower meadows, etc. Grazing animals keep the grass in the large meadow under control.
