The fortress hill of the Prizren Fortress, east of the old town, has long been a strategically important base and offers visitors a panoramic view of the city, plain and mountain range. The fortress walls enclose an area of about 1.5 hectares and give the fortress an ovoid appearance in north-south extension. The fortress is 525 meters above sea level.

Archaeologists found during excavations in 2004 and 2009-2011 that the site had been inhabited by humans since the Bronze Age. Iron Age, Roman and late antique finds were also made. The late antique historian Procopius of Caesarea (500-562) mentions in his work De Aedificiis (Eng. Buildings) within Dardania a fortress called Petrices. The researchers assume that this is the fortress.

Archaeological excavations began as early as 1969 and over time traces of medieval (11th-15th centuries) and Ottoman dwellings were found inside the fortress. The Ottomans also built a hammam, a mosque and military installations. The latter were used until 1912 and since then the fortress has been in a constant process of decay. Individual conservation and restoration work only began in 2008.

The fortress walls enclose an area of approximately 1.5 hectares and give the fortress an egg-shaped appearance in north-south dimensions. The fortress is located at 525 meters above sea level.

Archaeologists discovered during excavations in 2004 and 2009-2011 that the site had been inhabited by people since the Bronze Age. Iron Age, Roman and late antique finds were also made. The late antique historian Prokopius of Caesarea (500–562) mentions a fortress called Petrizen within Dardania in his work De Aedificiis. The researchers assume that this is the fortress.

The archaeological excavation work began in 1969 and over time traces of medieval (11th to 15th centuries) and Ottoman residential buildings were found within the fortress. The Ottomans also built a hammam, a mosque and military facilities. The latter were used until 1912 and since then the fortress has been in a constant state of decay. It wasn't until 2008 that individual conservation and renovation work began.

Free admission. At the foot of a small cafe with a view. Beautiful panorama at the top. From the fortress you can go on several marked hiking trips.
