As early as 1331, Schongau received its own minting rights. The old mint building is integrated into the city wall, the large mint gate (formerly Schmid-Königs-Tor or Schmid-Kemlins-Tor) is not an old main entrance to the city, it was created for road traffic. The medieval city entrances, such as the Maxtor and the Marientor, were built as gate towers.
