The spring that feeds the large fountain has been known since the 13th century. This valuable water outlet within the city walls contributed to the city's resistance during the sieges of 1479 and 1636.
This spring belonged to the city, which had to maintain it and preserve its water quality. Contrary to what legend has it, it was never reserved for use by lepers. Today's wash house dates from the 19th century. As the vault collapsed in several places, it was closed in 1953 with a reinforced concrete slab. In 1986 the fountain was restored.
