The Alm is a 48 km long tributary of the Traun. The alp was used for timber drifting and rafting until after the First World War. The tree trunks felled in the densely wooded areas on the upper reaches were transported via the Traun to the Danube. In order to always have enough water available for drifting, it was dammed with dams that were opened when needed. The weir systems were all equipped with raft lanes to enable continuous transport.
