In 1897 the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway opened the railway line from Schwerin to Rehna via Gadebusch. The station was built just outside the city. Freight traffic was also operated on the route for almost 100 years. Its peak was reached around 1970 when, in addition to the freight station, there was also a siding for several companies in the industrial area. Coal, building materials, agricultural machinery and fertilizers were transported to Gadebusch, while mainly agricultural products such as grain, sugar beet and slaughter cattle were transported. The railway line from Rehna to Parchim is now operated continuously by the East German Railway.

The history of the Gadebusch station began on October 12, 1897. On this day, the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz-Eisenbahn opened the railway line from Schwerin to Rehna via Gadebusch. This was a moving event for the residents of the region, since a connection between Gadebusch and the rail network had failed one or the other time in previous years. The Radegaststädter welcomed the first train, decorated with garlands, that passed the station with joy.
The train station with its waiting room, the counter hall and the small restaurant is one of the historically significant buildings in the small town, like the castle or the historic town hall. But ten years ago, public traffic came to an end. The vacant house was in danger of falling into ruin. The turning point came in 2009: the station changed hands, one year later construction work began and on May 9th, 2012 – after 18 months of construction – the Gadebusch station shone in new splendor.Source and further information:

The historic Gadebusch train station is now home to the “Station Burgsee” restaurant, which invites you to have a small snack. But there is also a lot to see outside.
