The tobacco fountain designed by Siegfried Speckhardt (born 1937) was erected in 1991 for the Hessentag in Lorsch. The walk-in fountain stands directly in front of the old town hall and shows a tobacco seamstress at work. The fountain is reminiscent of the painstaking work of the Lorsch tobacco seamstresses, who (until the introduction of the tobacco sewing machines from 1956) sewed the tobacco leaves together by hand with a needle and thread to prepare them for drying, thus bundling them together.
