The Wattenheimer Bridge lies at the intersection of two important old streets. This and the habitat around the bridge, with sufficient farming and the best collecting, hunting and fishing opportunities, ensured that people settled here in prehistoric and early historical times. The archaeological finds at the bridge range from the Neolithic period to the Roman period. An axe, an arrowhead, a hoe and a storage vessel were found from the Neolithic period (3000-1800 BC). Among other things, a coin was found from Roman times with the image of Emperor Nerva, dated 96–98 AD. The remains of a Roman swamp bridge were discovered at the Wattenheimer Bridge. The bridge was originally called Watterbrücke because it was in the Wattenrodt - a swamp clearing of the today's Großenackers - led. The original wooden bridge was replaced by the current stone structure in 1774. Until 1802, there was a customs station at the bridge between the Hessian and Mainz regions
