With the construction of the Leibis / Lichte dam, Germany's last large drinking water dam was built. Originally, the dam was supposed to secure, in addition to the stable drinking water supply of eastern Thuringia, the large water demand of the Central German lignite mining region ...
A natural and well-protected catchment area as well as the size and depth of the storage space ensure the above-average and long-term stable quality of the water from the Leibis / Lichte dam. For this purpose, the long-distance water supply system of East Thuringia was optimized in the years 2009 to 2014. In 2010, the trial of Talspere Leibis / Lichte was completed. On March 29, 2010, the dam reached its first full congestion. Thus, the trial is technically complete. Formally ended the trial with the official commissioning permission on January 29, 2013. On September 1, 2012, the dam Weida and Zeulenroda went from the network. The removal of the associated drinking water protection zones cleared the way for a tourist use of the dam Zeulenroda.

The currently last built and second highest (102.5 m) concrete dam in Germany is located near Unterweißbach in the Lichtetal, in the Thuringian Slate Mountains on the nature park route. The name of the Leibis-Lichte dam is derived from the place Leibis, whose inhabitants were resettled and the dammed river Lichte, a tributary of the Schwarza. It serves the drinking water supply East Thuringia and the flood protection. It is an ecological dike. Floods are simulated to preserve the habitat of plants and animals. The concrete dam is a concrete weight wall. It was built in block construction (about 1000 concrete blocks) and is not anchored in the rock.
It wears only by its own weight.

From the rest area, the view sweeps towards a part of the dam and towards Meura.
