A striking sight is "The Tholsel", Kilkenny's Rauthaus. The building (1761) is more than 300 years old and after a fire in the 80's it was carefully renovated.
The octagonal tower atop the town hall is particularly striking, making it not only unique but also easily recognizable.
It once served as a toll station and courthouse. Thieves and criminals had to make their way through the open arcades and face their judgment. Today, The Tholsel is used as a town hall and events venue.

The Tholsel derives from the English words "toll" and "sael" ("hall") and thus gives an indication of its purpose:
    taxes were paid here.

City hall beautifully decorated with flowers and traffic lights. As a pedestrian you can walk through an archway.

The Tholsel in High Street, Kilkenny, Ireland, was built in 1761 by Alderman William Colles as a place for collecting tolls, but has also been used as a customs house, courthouse and guild house. It is now used as the town hall, and it is by this name that many locals know the building.
