The sculpture “De Verzoening” in Nieuwpoort is a work of art by Willem Vermandere. It was unveiled on 8 October 2014 to commemorate 100 years of the Great War. The work of art is located on the Loodswezenplein in Nieuwpoort-Bad, at the geographical starting point of the western front. “De Verzoening” depicts a stone dialogue between two figures who met at the front and who became friends instead of enemies a hundred years later. The hands on the figures symbolize aggression, reconciliation, shelter and hospitality. The work reflects themes such as war and peace, which are close to the artist’s heart.
