When the Sint-Niklaas Abbey was founded in Veurne in 1120, it also had a chapel in Pervijze, in addition to a chapel dedicated to Saint Denis in Veurne. In 1120 or 1124 Pervijze was a parish dependent on said abbey.

A few hundred meters from here, a church dedicated to Saint Catherine was built around 1208, in the parish of Saint Catherine Chapel. This depended on the Abbey of Saint Bertinus in Sint-Omaars.

Pervijze was almost completely destroyed around 1566, during the religious disputes. In 1638 the west tower was rebuilt or repaired. From 1641-1642 the church was restored in a reduced form. It was then a two-aisled hall church with a pre-built west tower.

In 1793, much damage was done by the French troops, but the churches were spared. Around 1859 the north aisle was enlarged, with the tower being more or less built in. From 1892-1894 the church was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style and expanded by adding another nave north of the north aisle, creating a three-aisled hall church. The old tower was demolished and replaced by a neo-Gothic new building. The Sint-Katharinakerk was also demolished to pay for the new construction. The title of this church passed to the renovated church. Neo-Gothic church furniture was added. The church was consecrated in 1896.

During the First World War, the church was almost completely destroyed by German bombing. In 1923, the church was rebuilt according to the situation of 1892-1894, under the direction of Victor Creten. The church was dedicated in 1933.

During World War II, the church was slightly damaged before being restored in 1950.
