If you are a Thomas Hardy enthusiast this is a must - the small cottage where he was born and grew up, writing his early novels. The garden is large for the size of cottage (esp in today's terms) and there are plenty of walks nearby through woods. Entrance to cottage is along unmade gravel path from visitor centre where timed tickets for entry are issued. Great cycling in the forest if you are an off roader and obviously good for longer walks. Cafe in visitor centre nearby and seating for picnics. NT shop too.

Where Thomas Hardy grew up, it's a National Trust site that you can go and visit. If you're into Dorset history then it's a great detour from any route.
