After the existing fortifications of the 13th century had been destroyed around 1301 along with the old castle, a renewed attempt was made to fortify the city. The Herriger gate was first mentioned in 1371 after the Bonn gate in 1357. In this document it was stated on the occasion of a land survey: "The wheat field is 226 acres in size and lies in front of the Lechenich gate, called the Bonn gate (bunre portze). will be between the public road and the forest Eilau".
