"The Water Gate was built in 1450. It is located at the Old Harbor at the end of the street" Am Spiegelberg. "The water gate was one of the five major gates of the Hanseatic city of Wismar Part of the city fortification that protected the city to the port side, it was the only gate through which one could enter the city from the harbor.
Part of the historic city wall is reconstructed in a small form. Next to her are some old bastion cannons from the Hanseatic period.
Nowadays, the water gate is the seat of the association Club maritim. "Source: wismarer.de/wassertor.hansestadt.wismar.htm

The water gate was one of the 5 large gates of the Hanseatic city of Wismar. Its late Gothic gables are still impressive today

The Water Gate is the last of the original five city gates still standing. Its architectural style is classified as Brick Gothic and thus fits perfectly into the historic cityscape. At that time, it was an integral part of the city's fortifications.

The fortifications had a gate in the north, the Poeler Gate, in the south the Mecklenburg Gate, in the west the Lübsche Gate, in the east the Rostock Gate and the gate to the harbor, the Water Gate, which still exists today. The fortifications and with them its gates were built in 1450.

The Water Gate is characterized by its pointed arched passage and the crenellated stepped gable. On the side facing the city, there are six narrow blind arches and high light openings on three floors. On the side facing the harbor, however, there has been a triangular gable, three wide blind arches and four windows since 1600.

On both sides are two coats of arms: the split city coat of arms on the left and the old city coat of arms on the right.

In 1869/70, the city wall and the other gates were demolished.

The Water Gate and the old water tower are the last remaining traces of this wall.

In 1921, the Water Gate, along with the courtyard of the Holy Spirit Church, the St. Mary's Church tower, and the Old Harbor, was a filming location for the film Nosferatu.
