The rafts were not 'built', they were 'tied', with the logs held together by so-called cradles. These were thin spruce, hazelnut or willow trunks. Workers heat them in the kiln so that the wood sap begins to boil. Then they turned the wood into a ring. This gave the raftsmen a very elastic and tear-resistant wooden rope. The ropes were threaded through holes drilled in the raft's outer rows of logs. Later the rafts were then nailed and stabilized with cross logs.
