Sculpture: Vægteren (The Guardian)

The 1947 sculpture "The Guardian" is by J. P. Junggreen Have (1915-2008).

Three city guard houses stood on the site of this sculpture until 1827. Originally located in the middle of the "Guardian's Square" (Vægterpladsen), the sculpture had to give way to motorized traffic and was integrated into the pavement with its special rounded curb.

The artistic language of the sculpture is simple and monumental. All the details, even the warden's faithful dog, fit into its large, rounded shape. The artist has captured the watchman at the precise moment when he stops on his tour to sing the verse of the hour. Calm and composed, he holds his round-headed mace in his arms against his powerful body. The guard ensures peace and order. The city can count on him.
