Hans Theodor Woldsen Storm was born on September 14, 1817, in Husum.

At the age of 15, he wrote his first poems. His first publications in regional newspapers followed. From 1837, he studied law at the University of Kiel and in Berlin.

In 1843, he opened a law firm in Husum, but lost his bar in 1852 because of his uncompromising attitude toward Denmark. After stints in Potsdam and Heiligenstadt (Thuringia), he returned to Husum as a bailiff in 1864.

He wrote numerous poems and novellas and is considered one of the most important representatives of bourgeois or poetic realism in Germany.
