Zwernitz Castle, first mentioned in documents in 1156, is perched on a huge rock massif. At that time, the 32-meter high keep was used for the transmission of smoke signals to Plassenburg to Kulmbach. From the castle you have a magnificent view over the Franconian Switzerland. In the immediate vicinity of the castle Zwernitz is the rock garden Sanspareil with the Oriental building.

Zwernitz Castle, which was probably built in the middle of the 12th century, experienced destruction and reconstruction in its eventful history. Its current appearance mainly dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Very beautiful and well-preserved castle complex. Worth seeing.

Zwernitz Castle, enthroned on a narrow dolomite rock, was first mentioned in 1156 as the ancestral seat of the Walpots. Around 1300 it became the official seat of the burgraves of Nuremberg and later the Kulmbach and Bayreuth margraves. From the keep, from which there is a wide view of the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park, smoke signals could be passed on via a system of observation towers (waiting areas) to the Plassenburg in Kulmbach. Larger parts of the late Romanesque castle have been preserved, which can be recognized by the typical humpback blocks. In the 1740s, Margrave Friedrich had the castle repaired as part of the construction of the Sanspareil rock garden. In Zwernitz Castle there is an interesting documentation of the history of the castle, its inhabitants and the town of Sanspareil.
