The southern tower has been preserved from the Middle Ages, as have parts of the southern wall. The Anabaptist Fritz Erbe died in the windowless dungeon of the south tower in 1548 – after eight years in captivity. A commemorative plaque on the outer wall of the tower commemorates his fate.
From the south tower you have a good view of the courtyard with the cistern. Originally it was filled with sand, which was used for filtering.
