During renovation work at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Brixen, archaeologists have unearthed walls and frescoes from a 14th-century church. These are likely the remains of the first church built on this site.

First documented in 1348, the Holy Spirit Hospital is a typical example of the characteristic Gothic hospital buildings that were founded in Central Europe in the late 13th and 14th centuries to care for the sick and poor. The Gothic church of the same name, where early morning mass was now celebrated daily, had already existed previously.
