The Malakoff caponier, also known as Fort Malakoff, in Mainz was part of the Prussian fortress of Mainz and within it was part of the left bank fortifications on the Rhine (Rheinkehlturm). It was built in various stages from 1843 onwards as part of the straightening of the Rhine and later expanded.

Fort Malakoff was built as a multi-storey gun emplacement. The construction and reconstruction of this building on the left bank of the Rhine took place between 1843 and 1873, mainly in the second fortification phase (1841–1848). The building was given the name Fort Malakoff as a result of the Crimean War in Russia in 1855. In 1863, ownership of the building passed from the fortress to the Hessian Ludwig Railway. From this point on, it was made available to socially disadvantaged residents as housing for the poor.
