In the early Middle Ages, the Market in Asse already had several barracks and civilian homes.
From the many cozy terraces we can deduce that it has retained its role as a central meeting point.
The bronze Hop Devil hangs from its stake on the Market, it is the symbol of the summer storm winds that smashed the hop poles to the ground and of the other setbacks that the hop farmer had to deal with.
In the months of February and March you can taste delicious hop shoots, a local specialty, on the market square.
