Kruikenburg Castle

De Kruikenburg (also: Cruyckenbourgh or Cruykenburg) used to be a seigniory and later a county in Brabant. That seigniory consisted of the present-day municipality of Ternat together with the sub-municipalities of Wambeek and Lombeek. The name still refers to a moated castle west of Brussels, in Ternat in Flemish Brabant.

The name Kruikenburg comes from the pitchers that used to be on different towers of the castle. These pitchers were carved in rough stone. On top of it was a weather vane. A few years ago, the castle was provided with a new pitcher. On the tower above the entrance gate there is a reference to the old pitchers, a gold-plated pitcher with a weather vane.
Like many other medieval fortresses, the castle has a U-shape. This U is formed by three wings that surround a courtyard. Round towers are on the corners. Only the entrance tower is square.
