On the left side of the Agger in the direction of Lohmar was the Donrather Fährhaus (today Donrather Straße 24), which also housed the post office. Wilhelm Klein, popularly known as “de Fahrwellemsche”, had set up a ferry service here, which he ran until the bridge was built. Originally there was a ford here, through which the horse-drawn stagecoach, loaded with passengers and goods, had to travel from 1705 to probably 1806 on the route from Cologne-Mühlheim to Frankfurt.

From the time before the ferry operated and even before Scheiderhöhe became an independent parish in 1866, an event is still told today in Donrath: A funeral procession went from Heppenberg to the cemetery in Lohmar. The coffin had been loaded onto a handcart. The bank of the ford on the Sottenbach side was a bit sloping. Because it had been raining, the charioteers slipped the handcart and it ran into the Agger, tipped over and the coffin was swept down the river. Now the mourners had to catch the coffin again in waist-deep water and continue the funeral procession with wet clothes.
