Religious sanctuary whose exact date of construction is unknown but which dates back to approximately the 16th century.

It is built on the river Cerezuelo, which made it necessary to channel it previously, entering a large vault under the main altar, crossing the entire church, to continue its course under the Plaza de Santa María.
Due to the great storms and floods of 1694, the works on this sanctuary were not completed, so the project was never completed.

The ruins of Santa María were the most important monument of the Adelantamiento. Although the exact date of construction is not known, it seems almost certain that it was carried out in the 16th century. It is in the Renaissance style and its author is most likely Andrés de Vandelvira, since many of its elements can be found in well-known churches of his authorship in Úbeda. The façade facing Calle de la Hoz is an almost exact replica of the one that can be admired on the Church of San Miguel in Jaén.

It is unclear who commissioned its construction, whether the Episcopal Church of Toledo or the Margraves of Camarasa, then Adelantados, paid for it.

It is built over the Cerezuelo river, which meant that it had to be channeled beforehand, entering in a large vault under the main altar and crossing the entire church to continue its course under the Plaza de Santa María. It is very likely that the church was never quite completed and that the severe damage caused by the terrible storm and flood of 1694 made it even more difficult to complete (translated from turismoencazorla.com dondeiryquever/monumentosycentros/santamaria.php).

The ruins of the Church of Santa María in Cazorla are one of the town's most emblematic and unique monuments, both for their history and their location and architecture.
Work began in the 16th century, probably under the direction of the Renaissance architect Andrés de Vandelvira, although it was never fully completed.
It was built over the Cerezuelo River, which necessitated channeling the river beneath the church through a large vault.
