The building in question is the Barkhof Office Building (1909-1910), one of the first buildings on Mönckebergstraße. The imposing complex, bisected by the Barkhof Passage, was designed by the architect Franz Albert Bach. It takes its name from the Twiete (narrow alley) Großer Barkhof, where, until 1906, crooks and prostitutes lived and plied their trade. In 1910, the first retailers moved into the new Barkhof Office Building. A year later, the entrances to the "Barkhof" station (later "Mönckebergstraße") for the elevated and underground railway were also completed. Today, the building houses, among other businesses, the shoe retailer Görtz.
