A hermitage is also known as a woog in the Palatinate. It is an artificially created reservoir with brick dams and outflow openings. The logs cut here were between one and 1.75 meters long and were primarily used as firewood.
The craft of drifting in the Leinbachtal developed in the 19th century. The wood from the Leinbachtal was drifted into the Upper Rhine lowlands, where it was lifted out of the water again by the lumberjacks at so-called lumberyards. Drifting was only carried out on the Biedenbacher Woog in March and April, as this meant that damage to meadows could be avoided and the Leinbach could have its highest water level during this period."
