Leon Trulin was born in Ath (1897) but moved to Lille in his youth. In June 1915, during the height of the war, he wanted to join the Belgian army at the age of 18. He was "rejected" but did manage to work for the British intelligence service. He was caught, sentenced to death and shot on 8 November 1915 near the Citadel of Lille. Initially, the statue was there too, but it was moved to the Rue Léon Trulin, adjacent to the Place du Théâtre.
