In 1460 a hospice, a hospital - run by a monastic community - was built in the middle of Lille, with a chapel, a large infirmary, a cloister and a few spacious courtyards.
Nearly 550 years later, in 2003, the massive property became a five-star hotel. The name L'Hermitage Gantois subtly refers to the wealthy Ghent merchant Jean de le Cambre, who financed the building in the 15th century.
