Field stone church from the 14th century

"Only the old fieldstone tower is still reminiscent of the late Romanesque Mechau fortified church built in the 14th century, and the ravages of time had weakened the substance of the nave so much that a new building was required at the end of the 19th century.
The neo-gothic style that was customary at the time was used to create a building that is still one of the most impressive old-town village churches. For the nearly 300 inhabitants counting community, in its order of magnitude a church on increase.
Whether planning and execution were influenced by the work of Pastor Friedrich Hübener is not known. This clergyman, active in the church from 1838 to 1854, had the divine mandate to Adam and Eve: "Be fruitful and fill the church," and with his wife conceived seventeen children, eleven of whom were during his 16 years of service bored in Mechau. However, the villagers did not take their pastor as an example because the number of inhabitants continued to stagnate.

The villagers of Mechau always had a good relationship with their church. It is reflected in the fact that in about 400 years only 18 priests preached, while other parishes saw as many as 40 pastors in the same period.
The relationship was also reflected in the decoration of the newly built church. Thus, the beamwork was richly decorated and the large windows provided with elaborate Glasmaleei.

Particularly worth seeing in the Mechau church are the carved apostle reliefs that adorn the pulpit. An eye-catcher for every visitor. "
