From high school onward, Bartholdi resided at the Oberhof, a Carolinian estate at the origins of Colmar. On this site, where the Benedictine priory of Saint-Pierre once stood, the Jesuits founded the city's first French school in the 18th century. When the Society of Jesus was dissolved in 1764, the institution became a royal college. Dating from this period are the deed room and the neoclassical library, works of the architect Pierre Michel d'Ixnard, who built them between 1785 and 1787.

By ministerial decree of December 13, 1919, the school was named in honor of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.
