In 1114 Mörlach was first mentioned in a document as Immenerla. The village gave its original name to Otto de Immenerla, whose castle was located about 1 kilometer northwest of the village in today's Minettenheim.[3][4] In the documents that followed, the name of Otto's family and the name of the place were spelled similarly, for example Immenerlech in 1264,[5] Ymirleich in 1370[6] and Immenerlach in 1548.[7] Later we encounter similar, shortened place names such as Erlach and Merlach, finally Mörlach and, in today's dialect, Mirla. All forms of the name contain in the second part -erla, -erlech, -irleich, -erlach, -örlach and -irla the name of the place after an alder tree. The prefixes Immen-, and Ym- as well as the initial M- mean in one, in which or in.[8] This also corresponds to a document from 1302, in which the Mörlach church is listed in loco dicto zem Erlech.[9] The derivation of Immen = bees published by Johann Wolfgang Hilpert in 1862, on the other hand, is most likely wrong.[10][8]

On January 1, 1972, Mörlach and its Minettenheim district were incorporated into the town of Hilpoltstein
