The lock Hilpoltstein was built in the period from October 1983 to April 1989 as part of the construction of the federal waterway Main-Danube Canal. It is designed as a savings lock with three Sparbecken south of the lock basin and the northern boundary of the peak position of the channel. The upper water has a height of 406 m above sea level. NN, the lock underwater is located at 381 m above sea level. NN. As with the locks in Eckersmühlen and Leerstetten the lock drop height is 24.67 meters and thus has the largest drop height that has been built in Germany so far.

Impressive sluice system, the sluice process can be seen very well at the Eckersmühlen sluice, which is identical in construction. A smuggling is also an absolutely impressive event here, high precision of the crew 👍.
