The walls of Montfort Castle, a landmark of Langenargen with a magnificent and unique location on Lake Constance, tell a long story. Even in Roman times, two huge watchtowers stood side by side on an island in the lake. In the 14th century, the Counts of Montfort built the "Veste Burg Argen" there. In the 18th century, the counts expanded the castle in the Baroque style and had a castle garden with an orangery laid out. After the county was sold to Austria in 1780, however, the complex began to deteriorate. Finally, the castle served as a useful quarry for the people of Langenargener and as a romantic ruin for the viewer.
