Floodplain forests can be loosely described as “forests with wet feet”. More specifically, these are forests along the rivers and on the shores of Lake Constance that are periodically flooded, usually from the end of May to August. Only a few tree species can cope with these living conditions, especially the white willow and the black poplar, and in areas that have been flooded for a short time, the oak.
Floodplain forests are among the most valuable in terms of natural history, but also among the most endangered forests in Central Europe.

River meanders (backwaters) cut off from the flowing water are a valuable habitat for fish, tadpoles and countless aquatic insects. The floodplain forest is part of this protected ecosystem.
