On May 2, 1945, the prisoners of Sachsenhausen concentration camp were liberated by Soviet and US American troops on the death march near here. To commemorate and as a reminder, the sculpture "The Mother" by the sculptor Gerhard Thieme from Berlin was inaugurated in 1975. Next to the grieving mother are several panels depicting the suffering of the prisoners and their liberation. Every year on a Saturday between May 2nd and 8th, the Sachsenhausen memorial run starts here.
