At the end of the Second World War and as the front approached, the SS drove more than 30,000 prisoners from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, including women and children, on foot towards the northwest on a death march from April 21, 1945. Female prisoners from the Ravensbrück concentration camp were also heading in this direction. Hundreds of people died or were shot by the SS before the camp was liberated by Soviet or US troops in early May.

Since 1973, Raben Steinfeld has been home to the memorial and memorial site for the death march, with the sculpture "The Mother" by the sculptor Gerhard Thieme. In 1976, the artist added four relief steles to the memorial site.

The memorial stands on a section of the old road where traces of German and Soviet tanks can still be seen. It commemorates the liberation of this area from the Nazis. Soviet and American soldiers clashed here on May 4, 1945.

It also commemorates - in a uniquely moving way - the death marches. For over 6,000 prisoners of the Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück concentration camps, however, liberation came too late.

At the intersection in the east there is an older enamel sign with the title "Death March". At the western end of the road (towards Schwerin) there is a boulder with an inscription.

The "Mother" stands in the center of four bronze reliefs. She kneels with her head slightly bowed, one hand open, the other clenched into a fist.

In the background runs the new, four-lane B 321.

In memory of the victims of the death march, which ended here with the liberation of the concentration camp prisoners
