This was the only building that remained standing. The rest of the site was destroyed by "scorched earth." This must never happen again.

Many churches have been built throughout history in the area where Nordkapp Parish is located today. In the past, people lived mainly in the outermost corners of Magerøya in order to have the shortest possible way to the fishing grounds. As early as 1589 there were six churches on Magerøya, located on Kirkestappan in front of Gjesvær, in Tunes, Opnan, Helnes, Lille Skarsvåg and in Kjelvik. A church was probably built in Kjelvik as early as the late 15th century. In 1882 Finnmark was hit by a terrible hurricane. Many of the small fishing villages had been abandoned during the 17th and 18th centuries and by the 19th century Kjelvik had the only church on the island. This last church, dedicated in 1844, was literally razed to the ground by that hurricane. It was then decided to build a new church somewhere else - either in Sarnes or in Honningsvåg.
