The name of Xuedao Street came from the “Tidu Academy” set in this street in the Qing Dynasty. The Tidu Academy was managed by Tidu, who was the highest provincial educational commissioner, responsible for all the schools and the imperial examinations; The full name of this position was “Emperor Appointed Provincial Educational Commissioner of Tidu”, being simply called “Xuedao”, and respectively called “Xuetai”. In the imperial examination system of Qing Dynasty, the students must pass the county examination, the provincial examination and the institute examination to be a Xiucai scholar. All the students of the 16 counties of Chengdu Province had their provincial examination in the examination hall located at the west section of Xuedao Street. Xuedao Street was the book printing center in the whole southwest area in Qing Dynasty. In the east Xuedao Street, there was a Xianli Bureau, it was where all the calendars in the province were printed and published. In this street, there are the most famous private wood-carving bookstore of Chengdu “Zhigu Hall”, the biggest official wood-carving bookstore “Cungu Bookstore” and the modern stereotype bookstore “Er’you Mountain Cottage”. It is indeed a cultural street in the history of Chengdu.
