The People’s Park is the first modern park of Chengdu, as it was built in the Shao Cheng (Small City) area, it has been called (Small City Park). In the third year of Xuantong of the Qing Dynasty (1911AD), Yu Kun, the general of Chengdu raised money and built it. In 1914, the governor of Sichuan appointed Yin Zhongxi, the minister of administration to expand the park. The water of Jinshui River was led through a ditch into the garden, winding around the Heming Tea House and the Lotus Pavilion, flowing into the Lotus Pond; The earth from the ditch was made into a rockwork on the west of where the Lotus Pond was dug. In 1924, when Lu Zuofu, the famous entrepreneur was the Education Minister of Sichuan, he carried out renovations of large scale to the People’s Park by building the Culture Education Pavilion, the Exhibition Pavilion, the Museum, the Library, the Musical Hall, the Entertainment Field, the zoo, and the stadium etc. At the Lugou Bridge Incident of 1937, the generals and soldiers of Sichuan took their oaths together in the People’s Park. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, People’s Park was renamed “People’s Park”, which has been a place for the citizens to enjoy their leisure time having tea, reading newspapers, chatting, taking a walk or meeting friends.
